Political Process [RANT]

Tuesday, October 26th, 2004

When was the last time you felt really good about an election process?
Where you thought the candidates were clearly-defined, represented real choice, focused on the topics and task at-hand?
I’m going to vote - I ALWAYS have. I want my candidates to win. But I am disenfranchised. Courts are overturning vast-plurality approved mandates. [...]

QUICK Vacation

Monday, October 25th, 2004

As soon as the kids were off the bus we jumped in the van and drove 10 hours to Omaha for our “Fall Break.” We lock a TV-VCR onto the armrests between the driver and front-passenger seats and the kids watch videos most of the trip. Still, sitting still isn’t a favorite activity [...]

Book Fair

Monday, October 18th, 2004

Got to spend the morning working at Nicole’s school. The kids were so cute - coming up to the cash register with about 25 in books. I’d have to help them count their money (usually many dollars short of the required amount) and then help them evaluate what adjustments to make in their [...]

Indianapolis Half Marathon

Sunday, October 17th, 2004

Wasn’t pretty.
Wasn’t fast.
Wasn’t all that fun (VERY COLD, fought with my left ankle for several miles - then worried about it for several more).
But, running 13+ miles and still standing is an accomplishment. I’ll take it.

My Cousin Joel

Sunday, October 17th, 2004

Tonight, PAX TV showed “Sue Thomas, F.B.Eye” guest-starring my cousin (2nd, twice-removed or whatever that is [a]), Joel Sonnenberg.
Joel is an amazing guy. He also just published a book: “Joel” and is completing Seminary. Yes, he’s been pretty busy. If you get the chance, check out his website at: www.joel.cc.
[a] Joel’s dad, [...]

Feeble Church

Friday, October 15th, 2004

Do church in such a way that if God is not in it, it is doomed to fail FAST.
Do I want your church to fail? NO. Unless, God ISN’T in it. Then, I have to say, I absolutely want it to fail. And if God isn’t in my church I want [...]

Good News/Bad News

Thursday, October 14th, 2004

The bad news is: This project is A LOT harder than I expected. Every assumption, every existing tool, every familiar process is coming up short. The database isn’t cleanly structured (and doesn’t even match the documentation provided by the publisher). Simple processes are failing because I can’t lock on unique records. [...]

Church in the Park

Sunday, October 10th, 2004

We gathered in the park this morning. The kids and I went over early to find a prime location and so we spent several hours over there on this GORGEOUS autumn day. The meeting was fantastic - everybody contributed thoughts, we sang together, played frisbee, and just drank in all the colors, autumn [...]

Poverty on a Bell Curve

Wednesday, October 6th, 2004

I was alarmed a few weeks back with the news that America’s poverty rate had increased. That is the percent of households who earned less than the “poverty line”. I am not sure what that number is - if it is a single number for any household or per-individual in the home. [...]

Careers

Tuesday, October 5th, 2004

Spent a good amount of time this morning helping a friend whom I’ve yet to meet reviewing his resume and considering his “career” assumptions. He’s finishing up seminary, experienced in I/T and finance, and isn’t sure at all of what he’s supposed to do.
One thing that is becoming clear - he’s in need of [...]
